Eagles stormed back over final three singles matches to move on in ACC's
ROME, Ga. -- The Eagles stormed back to take down Louisville in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday night, topping the Cardinals 4-3 after dropping the doubles point. Stephanie Sanchez earned an important first point for the Eagles, winning the No. 4 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, starting the rally for Boston College. Plobrung Plipuech dropped her first set 4-6, but flipped the script in the second and third, winning 12 of 16 games over the final two sets, earning the Eagles their second point.Â
After Sophia Edwards dropped a highly-contested singles match in a third-set tiebreak, it came down to courts 2 and 6, with Laura Lopez and Muskan Mahajan, a late add, both in their third-sets with the match on the line. With everything on the line, Lopez fought back from 5-2 down in the final set, ultimately winning the match and tying the score 3-3. When it all turned to Mahajan, she responded, winning her final two sets 6-3, 6-2 to send Boston College to the second round and stun Louisville.Â
"Excited to advance in the tournament," said head coach Nigel Bentley, "We didn't play well in doubles but we rallied together in singles. I thought we were strong, winning three matches in the third set. We need to recover quickly and prepare for Georgia Tech tomorrow night."Â
The Eagles will take on the Yellow Jackets in the second round of the ACC Tournament Thursday night at 6:00.Â
