Eagles Survive on Thursday Against Virginia

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team survived a pesky Virginia squad with a 65-57 win on Thursday evening inside Conte Forum.
The Eagles improve to 15-7 and 6-5 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers fall to 3-16 and 0-9 in league action.
Cameron Swartz netted a game-high 18 points to lead three Eagles in double figures. The senior guard went 8-of-10 at the line, grabbed five boards, and collected three steals. Marnelle Garraud scored 14 points ( 11 in the second half) and dished out four assists.
Taylor Soule scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, collected seven off the glass, and posted four helpers. Maria Gakdeng turned in an all-around performance, setting a career-high with 16 rebounds (12 in the second half), scored eight points, and tied a personal best with five swats.
BC persevered through a cold-shooting performance to earn its first win over Virginia since the 2013-14 campaign.
The Eagles' best stretch on offense came late in the second quarter and into the third by hitting six straight field goals. After trailing 34-25 in the first half, four different players scored during a 10-0 run in the first 3:33 of the half to take a 35-34 advantage.
UVA took its final lead on the following possession before the Eagles held the Cavaliers to only five points in the 5:46 of the frame, leading to a 49-41 Eagle lead going into the fourth.
BC outscored UVA 24-7 in the quarter, limiting the Cavaliers to 20 percent shooting from the field.
The visitors stayed within striking distance as it cut the lead to just three with 7:53 left in the game. However, Garraud took over as she had a hand in 11 of the next 13 points (6 points/2 assists) to help BC pull away.
Eighteen of BC's season-high 28 free throws came in the second half, while making a vast improvement on the glass, out rebounding UVA by 10. The Cavaliers held a plus-13 rebounding margin in the first two periods.
BC returns to action on Sunday when it faces Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Blacksburg.
