February 19, 2022 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 13 Northeastern used a pair of third period goals to pull away from Boston College for a 4-1 Hockey East victory on Saturday night at Kelley Rink to split a home-and-home series.
The Eagles dropped to 11-16-5 (6-11-3 HEA) while the Huskies improved to 20-10-1 (10-7-1 HEA).
Senior assistant captain Patrick Giles collected his 12th goal of the season on assists from Trevor Kuntar and Drew Helleson. Eric Dop closed the night with 17 saves.
Aidan McDonough handed the Huskies an early lead just 23 seconds after the opening faceoff as he finished a centering pass from Ty Jackson at the top of the crease.
Matt DeMelis doubled the Northeastern lead at the 5:18 mark of the second, waiting back door to one-time a feed from Riley Hughes at the left post. Colby Ambrosio nearly pulled a goal back for the Eagles on the power play but rang the left post from the high slot.
Late in the middle frame, Giles put Boston College on the board with an individual effort. The senior collected the puck behind the net and held off a defender around the right circle before deking his way into the slot and flipping a backhand blocker side.
Three minutes into the third, Jakov Novak spun to his forehand along the right goal line extended and picked out the top left corner on the power play. Sam Colangelo pushed the NU lead to three at 4:31 when he ripped a left wing shot off the near post over Dop's shoulder.
Marc McLaughlin had a goal disallowed after video review due to goalie interference midway through the third.
