CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The 2022 Boston College baseball season begins Friday, Feb. 18 in Clarksville, Tenn. at Austin Peay. The Eagles and Governors begin a three-game set at 3 p.m. ET with games two and three following at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
About the Eagles...
BC is coming off a 21-28 season a year ago, despite peaking in the national polls at No. 13 in March; the highest ranking in program history. The Eagles return just 41.7% of at-bats and 54.7% of innings pitched. Senior catcher Peter Burns, a three-year starter, brings the most experience to the lineup with 80 career starts. Junior infielder Luke Gold, an All-ACC First Team third baseman a year ago, returns the most production to the lineup as a career .299 hitter with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 59 games. On the mound, senior right-hander Mason Pelio has made 31 starts with a 4.92 earned run average across 159 career innings. Senior RHP Joe Mancini gets the ball on opening day for his 20th career start.
Pure Power is Pure Gold...
In 2021, Luke Gold hit nine home runs; leading a BC lineup that went deep 38 times; the most since 38 in 2012. Gold was just the third BC hitter with nine or more home runs in a season since 2015; Chris Shaw (11, 2015) and Jack Cunningham (9, 2019). Gold posted a three-home run weekend at Auburn and homered in three straight games vs. Holy Cross and UNC. He became the first Eagle since Mickey Wiswall (2010 vs. Clemson) to homer in three straight.
Birdball Captains...
Four players were chosen by their teammates to serve as captains in 2022. Senior catcher Peter Burns is the first two-time captain at BC since Carmen Giampetruzzi (2018, 2019) and just the third in Gambino's tenure; the first being Tom Bourdon (2013, 2014). Burns is joined by senior pitcher Mason Pelio and junior infielders Vince Cimini, who will wear the No. 8 in honor of Sonny Nictakis, and Luke Gold.
Summer Ball All-Stars...
Seven Eagles earned summer league all-star honors in 2021, including sophomore outfielder Travis Honeyman that won NECBL MVP honors and the league batting title with a .430 average. Junior outfielder Barry Walsh also earned NECBL All-Star honors, while sophomores Patrick Roche and Aidan Crowley were Futures League All-Stars. Sophomores Joe Vetrano and Cameron Leary earned All-Star appearances in the MLB-run Appalachian League. Junior infielder Luke Gold hammered six home runs and hit .267 as a Cape League All-Star.
Graduate School...
Boston College added four players as graduate transfers for the season, including three right-handed arms and a left-handed hitting outfielder. Brendan Coffey led the Northeast Conference in saves in 2021 with 10 across 35.1 innings with 40 strikeouts and a 0.76 ERA. Liam Dvorak, a member of the Irish National Team at the 2019 European Baseball Championships, won nine games with a 4.33 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 143.1 innings at Holy Cross. Henry Leake arrives from Division III Babson, where he pitched in 37 career games, including 24 appearances as part of the Beavers' 2019 World Series team.
