Offense starts out hot as Eagles mercy rule Sharks
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Boston College softball opened up their 39th season with a 9-1 victory against Long Island University in five innings. The Eagles are now 1-0 and the Sharks drop to 0-3.
BC got the scoring going early, putting up a five spot in the top of the first. Freshman catcher Hannah Slike hit a bases loaded, 2-run single for her first career hit and RBI to get the scoring going. Slike later stole second allowing Nicole Giery to take home. Moments later, freshman outfielder Darien McDonough hit her first collegiate home run in her first career at bat. The two-run shot to right field made it 5-0 Eagles.

The Eagles scored three more runs in the second inning. Ellie Mataya stole home on a wild pitch. Slike singled again to pick up another RBI, and McDonough doubled to right center to bring her home. In the third inning, Elisabeth Laviolette hit an RBI single to score Mataya to put BC up by eight, allowing for the mercy rule to come into effect.Â
