BC Pushes No. 5 NC State to the Brink in Setback
February 10, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team pushed No. 5 NC State to the brink, but fell in overtime on Thursday evening in Conte Forum, 85-78.
Boston College falls to 15-9 overall and 6-7 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack improves to 22-3 and 13-1 in the league.Â
Cameron Swartz scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting and four 3-pointers. The senior did her damage in the first half with 18 points, while she grabbed six rebounds. Taylor Soule recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points (11 in the second half) and tied a season-high with 10 rebounds.Â
In front of a season-high 2,547 fans in the annual Play4Kay game, the contest that featured 15 ties and eight lead changes didn't disappoint.Â
Ally VanTimmeren hit four of her six field goals en route to 10 points, but no basket was bigger than her layup with one second left on the clock to send the game into overtime. BC trailed by three with 21 seconds left in regulation followed by Swartz's layup to cut the deficit to one. NC State went 1-of-2 at the line on the ensuing trip, which gave the Eagles a chance to tie.Â
Both teams traded free throws in the early goings of overtime before Swartz hit a jumper to give the Eagles the lead, 74-72. However, NC State's 9-0 run over the next 2:25 led the Wolfpack to pull away for the win.
Boston College came out swinging in the opening quarter thanks to a 16-5 start in the first 6:37 of the contest. Swartz led the charge with 10 of the points. BC hit its final eight shots of the frame to go into the second period with a 23-12 lead.Â
The Eagles jumped out to their largest lead of 14 points after Swartz went on a personal 5-0 spurt. NC State responded by holding BC to just three points over the final 4:34 of the half to slice the gap to three going into the break.Â
Neither team held a lead by more than five in the last two quarters. NC State went up by five late in the third period, but Soule scored five points of her own to tie the game up. Both of Kaylah Ivey's 3-pointers in the third gave BC a lead, including her trifecta that pushed the Eagles to a 51-50 lead going into what was a back-and-forth final quarter.Â
BC held NC State to a season-worst 19.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Wolfpack came into the game second in the nation at a 39.5 percent shooting clip.
The Eagles hit 10 3-pointers for the third time this season, while the 47.6 percent showing from 3-point range was the highest a team has shot against NC State this season.Â
NC State posted a plus-10 margin in free throws (16-6) and won the battle on the glass. Diamond Johnson led five players in double figures with 22 points off the bench.Â
Boston College will have the weekend off before hosting Pitt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Conte Forum.Â
