Mair and Todd Score a Career-High 15 Points
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Behind three players in double figures, Boston College women's basketball dealt Providence a 73-64 setback on Sunday afternoon in Conte Forum.Â
The Eagles have won back-to-back games for the first time this season to improve to 3-2, while the Friars are 3-2.Â
The freshmen duo of Taina Mair and T'Yana Todd paced the offense by scoring a career-high 15 points apiece. Mair also led the team with five assists and grabbed three boards.Â
Todd did her damage in the second half with nine of her 13 second-half points coming in the fourth quarter. The Canada native went a perfect 8-of-8 from the line coming off the bench. Maria Gakdeng recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. The sophomore shot 5-of-7 from the floor.Â
The Eagles wasted no time in getting off to a fast start thanks to a layup from Gakdeng and back-to-back trifectas from JoJo Lacey and Mair in the first 1:56 for an 8-0 run.Â
Providence sliced the deficit to eventually tie up the contest going into the second period, 14-14.Â
BC put together a 16-3 run that turned the game into a 13-point advantage for the hosts. Ally VanTimmeren and Kayla Lezama stepped up off the bench with six points apiece to help spearhead the surge. The Eagles went into the break with a 36-26 edge head into the break.Â
The Friars cut the gap to just six with six minutes left in the third quarter before Gakdeng and Mair scored seven of the game's next nine points to stretch the lead back to double digits.Â
BC kept the visitors from getting any closer the rest of the contest. Providence got back to within eight in the final quarter, but seven straight points by Todd kept the Friars at bay.Â
The Eagles scored 20 points off turnovers and registered 27 points from their bench, outscoring Providence's reserves by 16.Â
BC will have a stretch of three games in four days, beginning with Holy Cross on Wednesday at 12 p.m. in Conte Forum.Â
