Eagles Pull Out Win In Five Set Battle Against Hokies On Senior Day
November 19, 2022 | Volleyball
Chestnut Hill, Mass – Boston College defeated Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon, the Eagles won by scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 15-9. BC improves their record to 19-12 overall and 7-10 in the ACC while Tech moves to 11-17 and 4-13 in the conference.Â
The Eagles dominated the entirety of set one, starting off on a very quick 12-4 lead and finishing it off on a 7-2 scoring run. They played some impressive defense holding the Hokies to just a .083 hitting percentage in the set, including some nice blocks at the net from Sophomore middle blockers Julia Haggerty (Lafayette, Calif) and Jenna Pollock (St. Catharines, Ont).Â
After Virginia Tech responded with a 25-19 set two win, BC knew they had to respond and that they did as they outhit the Hokies .313 to .094 in the set. The key moment of the set came on a 7-1 scoring run for the Eagles highlighted by kills from Seniors Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) and Kate Brennan (Endicott, N.Y).Â
You just knew set four would end up going down to the wire after some a few lopsided sets previously and it would certainly prove to be that. Especially after BC nearly had one of their moments of the season mounting a furious comeback to force deuce at 24-24 after going down as many as eight points when it was 22-14. While Virginia Tech would go on to force a fifth set winning 28-26, the momentum created for Boston College heading into set five was certainly clear.Â
Head Coach Jason Kennedy had this to say on the near comeback in the fourth set...
"Well they could have folded when it was 20-12 or whatever it was and instead they fought and came all the way back to force deuce. And I think that is what gave us the momentum to start the fifth set. Its heartbreaking to lose a set like that but if we don't make that run then they have all the momentum going into the fifth and we probably don't go up 8-4 at the switch."Â
For BC, Izzy Clavenna, Jenna Pollock and Kate Brennan led the way on both sides of the ball. Clavenna finished with 14 kills on a .419 hitting percentage, Pollock tallied 13 kills, nine digs and three blocks and Brennan was absolutely everywhere in this one, going for 12 kills on an impressive .688 hitting percentage as well as six digs, five blocks and two service aces.Â
BC honored their three seniors today, Silvia Ianeselli, Izzy Clavenna and Kate Brennan, Head Coach Jason Kennedy on their impact this season and what they have meant to his program...Â
"I think they have been kind of the backbone of this team, especially late this year we have relied on all three of them quite a bit. Kate has come in and had an immediate impact right off the bat, starting in every match for us, Izzy started and played in every match for us this season, and Silvia has come on strong late, we wouldn't have had the success we have had at the end of this season without her coming into a role where she never comes off the floor. She's the only person who never comes off the floor. So those three have been huge for the success of the group this year for sure."Â
Boston College will finish out their regular season in Pittsburgh to take on the #7 ranked Pitt PanthersÂ
