Mason Madsen hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Mason Madsen drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining and Makai Ashton-Langford's two free throws with less than two seconds remaining helped Boston College complete the second half comeback win, 70-66, over Detroit Mercy on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles trailed by as many as eight points in the second half - 60-52 with 10:34 left - but outscored the Titans, 18-6 down the stretch to secure the victory. Trailing by three with under a minute left in regulation, BC scored seven unanswered points to move to 2-0 on the season.
Madsen finished with a season-high 18 points - one off his career-high - knocking down five 3-pointers to go along with five rebounds. Ashton-Langford had 15 points - all in the second half - to go with two rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jaeden Zackery added 14 points and spent the majority of the night hounding Detroit Mercy's sensational scorer Antoine Davis, who had 15 points on 6-of-19 shooting (3-11 3FG).
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with six lead changes and five ties. Detroit Mercy would lead by one at the break, 34-33. That trend continued, with five lead changes and a tie through the first two minutes of play in the second half. Tied at 40-40 after two Zackery free throws, Detroit Mercy scored six straight and led 49-43 with just under 16 to go. A Davis 3-pointer with 10:34 was the high-water mark for Detroit Mercy, as the Boston College comeback began.
Layups from CJ Penha Jr. and Zackery cut the deficit in half before a thunderous dunk from Ashton-Langford made it a one-score game with 8:59, keying the comeback.
T.J. Bickerstaff registered his second straight double-double, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Eight of his 11 boards came on the offensive glass. Penha chipped in with five points, four boards, and two assists in 28 minutes. Devin McGlockton had four rebounds and three blocks in 15 minutes.
BC closes out its season opening home stand on Monday evening, when it hosts Maine at 6 p.m. at Conte Forum. The game will air live on ACC Network.
