Eagles secure No. 4 seed in ACC Tournament with win over Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 22 Boston College Eagles (8-9, 3-3) cruised to a decisive upset victory over the No. 8 Louisville Cardinals (12-6, 1-5) on Friday afternoon, pouring in four unanswered goals to earn a 4-1 win.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead after the initial save from Emily Gillespie stayed in front of the net, and the rebound trickled in. It was Gillespie's lone blemish on the day, however. Making her seventh start of the season, the Kentucky native faced 14 shots and tied her season-high in saves, stopping six shots including several crunch-time chances down the stretch.
The Eagles got on the board in the opening minutes of the second quarter, sparked by a Kendall Hanlon takeaway in the Louisville half. Kara Heck controlled the ball in the circle, and Margo Carlin converted in front of the net for her fourth goal of the season to tie the game.
The game would not be tied for long. Just three minutes later, Kara Heck dumped the ball into the circle, right to Carlin. Just moments after her first, Margo Carlin scored her second of the game on a savvy turnaround shot, beating the goalie stick-side for a first-half brace and the Eagles' lead.
Entering the second half with a 2-1 lead, the Eagles added important insurance early in the third period. Mia Garber and Eva Kluskens both got shots on goal before the rebound trickled to none other than Margo Carlin, who finished cleanly to complete the hat trick and put Boston College up 3-1.
With under five minutes left in regulation, the Eagles extended the lead on their only penalty corner of the game. Margo Carlin inserted and found Peyton Hale, who did what she does best, beating the goalie from the top of the circle.
Coming into the game as the two leading scorers, both Carlin and Hale added to their totals, with Hale up to a team-high eight goals on the season. With three goals and an assist, Carlin raised her scoring total to seven goals, and 18 total points, behind only Hale's 20.
The Eagles timely upset victory secured their standing above Louisville in next week's ACC Tournament. Boston College clinches the four-seed, and will prepare for first-round action this Monday.
