January 16, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team fell to No. 2/3 Louisville, 63-53, on Sunday afternoon inside Conte Forum.
BC 12-5 and 3-3 in ACC play, while the Cardinal are 15-1 and 5-0 in league action.
Taylor Soule paced the offense with a team-high 17 points (10 in the second half) on 8-of-16 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Cameron Swartz rounded out the leading scorers with 12 points, three assists, and two rebounds.
Maria Gakdeng battled down low for a team-high seven boards on top of eight points, a career-high three steals, and two blocks.
BC got off to a strong start out of the gate, hitting eight of its first 16 shot attempts. Swartz scored six of the Eagles' 11 points during an 11-2 surge over the final 4:40 of the period to give BC a 20-10 edge going into the second quarter.
What proved to be the difference was the second quarter in which the Cardinals outscored BC, 22-5. UofL held BC to two field goals and 10 turnovers to go into the half with a 32-25 edge. The Eagles outscored their foe in the other three periods by seven points.
The Eagles continued to battle despite trailing by double digits early in the second half. Soule started a 12-4 surge with BC trailing by 12 to slice the gap to 41-37. Dontavia Waggoner stepped up off the bench to score five of her seven points during the run.
It was the closest the Eagles would get, as UofL went back up by nine by scoring seven of the next nine points to go into the fourth with a 48-39 lead.
Louisville stayed in front the rest of the way to pull out the win, never allowing the Eagles to get within striking distance.
The 21 turnovers forced by the Eagles are a season-high for the Cardinals, but they only managed to score 15 points off the miscues. UofL took advantage of 24 turnovers for 27 points.
BC grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, which ties for the most given up by UofL this season. However, the Eagles scored only five points on the second-chance opportunities.
BC aims to bounce back on Thursday against Notre Dame at 6 p.m. in Conte Forum.Â
