January 13, 2022 | Skiing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College skiing team begins the 2022 EISA carnival season with the Colby Carnival on Friday and Saturday at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. The giant slalom will be contested on Friday beginning with first run at 9 a.m., followed by the slalom on Saturday.Â
YEAR IN REVIEW
In 2021, Boston College navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and sent a full squad of six to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. Parker Biele posted the highest NCAA finish in program history with 13th place in the giant slalom. BC returns four of the six skiers it sent to the NCAA Championships last season, including all three male athletes.Â
Biele became not only the first skier in school history win an EISA carnival title (St. Lawrence Carnival at Whiteface), but also the first to claim the EISA overall title in giant slalom. On the men's side, Zach Simmons became the first male skier ever to reach an EISA podium with second in the giant slalom at St. Lawrence. Biele finished first in the EISA GS individual rankings for the season, while Simmons was third.
Following the season, a program-record 12 members of the team were named to the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team. Biele and Spencer Wright also qualified for the 2021 World University Games in Switzerland, but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.
NEWCOMERS
The Eagles have added five new skiers to the roster for the 2022 season, including four freshmen and a graduate transfer. Chiara Maria Ferrari and Lauren Hunter join the women's team, while Kalle Kristian Nergaard and Cam Smith compete for the men's squad. Spencer Smith comes to the Heights after skiing at the University of Vermont, but will miss this season while rehabbing from injury.
UP NEXT
The EISA circuit heads to Smuggler's Notch in Vermont next weekend for the St. Michael's Carnival on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22.
