Swartz Named POTW | Gakdeng Collects FOTW for Third Time
GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the first time since joining the ACC, the Boston College women's basketball team swept the weekly ACC Player of the Week awards, the league office announced on Monday.
Cameron Swartz was named the ACC Player of the Week, while Maria Gakdeng collected the freshman of the week award for the third straight week.Â
It's the first time this season a school swept both weekly awards. Gakdeng is the first Eagle since Mariella Fasoula (2015-16) to win freshman of the week three times in the same season. Swartz collects the honor for the first time in her career.Â
Swartz put forth a stellar week in helping the Eagles go 2-0 with wins over Syracuse (95-71) and Clemson (80-74). The senior guard averaged 25.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and posted impressive shooting splits of .643/.538/1.000.Â
She highlighted her week by tying the single-game scoring record with a personal-high 39 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field against Clemson. Swartz's 14 field goals tied for the second-most in a game, and her nine rebounds tied a personal high.Â
Gakdeng averaged 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and shot 76.5 percent from the floor. The freshman led the team in rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocked shots.Â
Against Syracuse, she fired in a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting and pulled down nine off the glass. Gakdeng is one of four true freshmen in the country to score at least 20 points, grab nine rebounds and shoot 75 percent from the field.Â
She set a career-high with five blocked shots in the road win at Clemson, tying the most in a single game in ACC play this season. She scored 22 of her 30 points in the third and fourth periods.Â
