High-octane first half proves to be the difference in first game of B1G/ACC Cup
DURHAM, N.C. — No. 7 Boston College scored three first half goals, proving to be the difference in a 3-2 win over No. 9 Maryland in the first game of the B1G/ACC Cup on Friday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
Milagros Arteta got the scoring going early, converting from in front of the net by the penalty circle, taking the pass from Elizabeth Warner and putting it past Terps goalie Noelle Frost in the fifth minute. Maryland countered just over a minute later, tying it at 1-1. Â
Sarah Johnson made it 2-1 in favor of the Eagles at the 12:02 mark, tallying her second goal of the season on a rebound from a shot by Fusine Govaert. Maryland would again respond, beating BC goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy one-on-one converting a steal in the circle.
Arteta struck again - tallying the eventual gamewinner on an aerial pass from Sky Caron, taking it into the circle and finding the back of the cage for the third time this season. BC would lead 3-2 at the break and would hold on for the win in a scoreless second half.
Kennedy made five saves for the win in her first appearance of the season. BC held a 14-13 edge in shots. Both teams put seven shots on goal and each team attempted six penalty corners.
Boston College returns to action on Sunday as play in the B1G/ACC Cup continues. The Eagles take on No. 4 Northwestern at 11 a.m.
