Sigurdarson and Suski Power Eagles Past Holy Cross 3-2 in Overtime
September 14, 2021 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – Michael Suski's penalty in the 95th minute powered Boston College past Holy Cross 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night to preserve an unbeaten four-match homestand for the Eagles.
BC improved to 3-1-1 overall after a 3-0-1 stretch at the Newton Soccer Complex while handing the previously unbeaten Crusaders (3-1-2) their first loss of the season.
The teams went into the final 15 minutes of regulation scoreless before combining for four back-and-forth goals in just over five minutes.
Stefan Sigurdarson flicked a header from a Sam White feed past Jimmy Joyce in the 79th minute to break the deadlock, but Evan Jones responded for Holy Cross just 1:05 later.
Sigurdarson's second of the night in the 81st minute restored the lead as he slipped a ball from Aidan Farwell inside the left post. It marked Siguardarson's second two-goal performance of the homestand to give the junior a team-leading five goals. Suski added the second assist on the play for a three-point night.
A little over three minutes later, Max Krause curled a left-footed effort inside the far post for Holy Cross to send the match to overtime.
Siguardarson was the catalyst for the game-winning penalty, running onto a perfectly angled through ball from Tyshawn Rose before being tripped by Joyce in the corner of the 18-yard box. Suski stepped up and calmly slotted a shot into the right half of the net to send Joyce the wrong way.
BC out-shot Holy Cross 24-7 in total attempts on the night, led by 10 from Sigurdarson and six from Amos Shapiro-Thompson.
