Eagles Open Season With Sweep of Pioneers

BC volleyball claims victory over SHU at home on Friday.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball swept Sacred Heart, 3-0, at Power Gym on Friday night to open its season with a win. The Eagles won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-16.
Junior right side Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore outside hitter Katrina Jensen (Temecula, Calif.) tied for the team lead with nine kills each. Clavenna hit a team-high .438, while Jensen added four digs and three blocks.
Sophomore libero Bridget Green (New York, N.Y.) picked up a team-leading 11 digs, while graduate outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.) added 10 digs and seven kills.
In set one, Jensen tallied three kills in first six points as BC raced out to 5-1 lead. Clavenna's fourth kill pushed BC's lead to 23-18 and forced a timeout for the Pioneers. Jensen and junior middle blocker Gabby McCaa (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished the set on a combo block.
Back-to-back kills from graduate middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu (Laurel, Md.) and McCaa put BC ahead 8-7 in the second. The Eagles' largest lead of the frame came at 19-13 on Jensen's sixth kill before a Chukwujekwu kill won the set.
The two sides went back-and-forth early in the third. BC took lead the at 11-10 on Naughton's seventh kill. The Eagles then pulled away from a 14-14 tie, including back-to-back Clavenna kills to lead 18-14 and force a SHU timeout. Again, it was Chukwujekwu on set point with the kill to claim victory for the Eagles.
Sophomore setter Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.) paced the BC attack with 16 assists and 15 assists, respectively. Lambros added seven digs to her line.
Boston College faces Hartford at 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by a nightcap against Northeastern at 7 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ACCNX.
