AMHERST, Mass. – Boston College opened a five-game week with a 3-2 setback to Massachusetts at Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday evening. The Eagles dropped to 19-23, while the Minutemen improved to 13-26.

The game decided in the eighth inning when UMass loaded the bases with one out against freshman left-hander Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.), who had worked a perfect seventh. BC turned to graduate lefty Joey Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.) in the jam. The Eagles got a force at home and were a strike away from stranding the bases loaded when a wild pitch to the backstop scored the eventual game-winning run.

Freshman right-hander Joey Ryan (Norwood, Mass.) made his first start in over a month and turned in six innings of two-run ball. He was charged with two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts to no walks in a 71-pitch no-decision. UMass righty Max LeBlanc struck out eight in six innings of work. He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks.

Vetrano (1-3) took the loss in 1.1 innings with one run scored on two this and a walk plus one strikeout. Right-hander Tucker Wittman (2-2), the second UMass reliever of the day got the win in two-scoreless innings with one hit against and one strikeout. BC batters totaled 11 strikeouts in the game.

The Minutemen outhit the Eagles, 9-6, for the game. Shortstop Eddy Hart and center fielder Kevin Skagerlind each had two knocks. Second baseman Aidan Wilde hit a go-ahead, solo home run in the sixth inning.

- Morissette led off the fourth with a double to right and scored on a Cunningham groundball to the right.
- With two on and two out in the sixth, Cimini singled to third and scored Gold, who led off the frame with a single, from second base.
