Gold Powers BC Past Miami to Claim Series

Sophomore designated hitter drives in six to lead the Eagles to an 11-6 win.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team won its series against Miami with a 11-6 victory behind four hits and six RBI from sophomore second baseman Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.) at the Harrington Athletics Village on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles, who won their first ACC series since the first league weekend of the season in late February, improved to 19-22 overall and 8-19 in league play, while the Hurricanes fell to 24-15 and 15-14.

Gold was 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI and two runs scored. He doubled in two runs as part of a six-run bottom of the second for BC and drilled a two-run home run in the fourth. On a misplayed hit to center in the sixth, Gold earned a triple and was out at home on the play attempting an inside-the-park home run. With a chance at the cycle in the ninth and needing a single, Gold ripped a RBI-double.

Graduate right-hander Alex Stiegler (Dallas, Texas) worked through the sixth, striking out four and walking four. He surrendered five runs in the third, but put up four zeroes and managed to limit Miami to a run in the sixth after a leadoff-triple. Stiegler (2-2) exited after the sixth with a four-run lead and six runs against; all earned.

The Eagles jumped all over right-hander Jake Garland (5-2) beginning with a run in the first inning as junior center fielder Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) hit a leadoff-triple and scored on a single up the middle by junior second baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.). BC followed with six runs in the second on six hits; sending 10 batters to the plate. Garland was pulled in the second after giving up seven runs on eight hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.

The Hurricanes trimmed the Eagles' lead to two runs with a five-run third that started with a leadoff-home run by catcher Carlos Perez, who went 2-for-2 with two runs. Stiegler responded with a shutdown-fourth and Gold got two runs back on his ninth home run of the season.

The top three batters in the Boston College lineup collected multi-hit games. Frelick was 2-for-4 with three runs, a double and a triple. Graduate shortstop Brian Dempsey (Potomac, Md.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI and Morissette added a 2-for-4, two-RBI day with a run.

Freshman lefty Charlie Coon (Duxbury, Mass.) earned a three-inning save; his second of the season. He struck out two and gave up just a two-out single in the eighth across three-shutout innings.
