Team Boston Beats Team Eagles 20-16 in Spring Game

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team hosted the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game on Saturday under sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures at Alumni Stadium. Team Boston defeated Team Eagles 20-16 in a back-and-forth affair.Â

Redshirt senior Dennis Grosel scampered 17 yards off the right side on a read-option for a first quarter touchdown to open the scoring. Freshman Connor Lytton converted a 25-year field goal to give Team Eagles a 10-0 lead after one quarter.Â
Team Boston roared back with 14 points in the final minute of the first half to take the lead. Phil Jurkovec hit Zay Flowers in the back right corner of the endzone with exactly 1:00 left in the half for a 32-yard score. Jurkovec connected again with Flowers along the left sideline from 28 yards away with only 14 seconds remaining.Â
Jurkovec finished the day 14-for-20 through the air for 196 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one rush for 13 yards. Grosel opened the day 7-for-7 passing and closed with 128 yards with 23 yards rushing.Â
The teams traded late touchdowns in the final five minutes, coming off short throws from redshirt sophomore Daelen Menard to Jackson Treister followed by redshirt freshman Matthew Rueve to Andrew Landry for the winning score.Â
Sophomore wideout Taji Johnson was extremely active in the passing game for Team Eagles, catching a game-high seven passes for 63 yards. Redshirt freshman tight end Charlie Gordinier pulled down four catches for 56 yards, while redshirt junior tight end Brendan Smith hauled in four receptions for 42 yards.
On defense, Jalen Williams and Jahmin Muse recorded first half interceptions along with lengthy returns for Team Boston. Redshirt freshman Denzel Blackwell registered a pair of pass breakups in the first half for Team Eagles and another in the second half.Â
Graduate student Deon Jones was named the recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship.Â

The award is given annually since 1993 to a Boston College defensive back who best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit, and personal concern for family friends and teammates.
McGillis, a starting defensive back for Boston College, passed away from Leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.
Boston College opens the 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Colgate in Chestnut Hill.
