Three Eagles Named to U.S. Roster for World Championships

Cayla Barnes, Megan Keller and Alex Carpenter will represent the U.S. at the 2021 World Championships.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Current Boston College women's hockey player Cayla Barnes along with Alex Carpenter '16, and Megan Keller '19 have been named to the U.S. National Team roster that will compete at the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championships in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.

All three Eagles were members the U.S. squad that won a fifth-consecutive gold medal at the most recent edition of the tournament, the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Finland. Carpenter has been a member of all five of those gold-medal winning squads while it was the fourth medal for Keller. Barnes captured her first gold in what was her World Championships debut.Â

All three Eagles were named to the roster for the 2020 tournament that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Barnes and Keller were also members of the U.S. squad that claimed gold at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games while Carpenter earned a silver medal with the U.S. at the 2014 games.

This year, Carpenter has been playing for the KRS Vanke Rays in the WHL while Keller has been skating for the PWHPA. Barnes, a Second Team All-American and Hockey East First Team All-Star selection this season, finished her third season at BC with 10 points on four goals and six assists while blocking a team-leading 36 shots. Barnes scored two game-winning goals for the Eagles and picked up two power play points while finishing with a plus-9 rating. The Eastvale, Calif. Native also had 59 shots on goal to rank eighth nationally among blue liners. The captain fired at least two shots on goal in 17 of her 19 games played during the 2020-21 season.

The 2021 World Championships will begin on May 6, with the gold medal game taking place on May 16. The U.S. has won the last five IIHF Women's World Championships and captured the top prize a total of nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), including eight of the last nine tournaments.
