NCAA Championships Day 1 Update

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Boston College fencing team kicked off the 2021 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships on Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State.

DAY 1 RECAP
- BC's competitors in men's epee, sabre and foil competed in the first three rounds of the five-round round robin … the Eagles' performances put them in third place after the first day.
-In sabre, Bolang Meng found himself in third place after the first three rounds after going 11-4 with a plus-12 touch differential … meanwhile, Spencer Kuldell was in sixth place after winning 10 bouts and maintaining a plus-10 touch differential.
-Bin Huang sat in sixth place in foil on the strength of 10 bout wins and a plus-17 touch differential … Clayton Reid sat in 15th place with a 7-8 record.
-In epee, Will Smith went 7-8 to sit in 16th while Daniel Gaidar was in 21st place.
UP NEXT
-The competition will resume tomorrow, March 26 with the fourth and fifth rounds of the men's foil, sabre and epee at 9 a.m. followed by the 1 p.m. semifinal and championship bouts.

NCAA TOURNAMENT FORMAT
-Fencers are competing in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts ... after the round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
-An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
