ACC Fencing Championships Day One Recap

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Boston College fencing team kicked off the first day of the ACC Fencing Championships on Saturday at Carmichael Arena with the individual competitions. In women's sabre, the Eagles saw Rachel Liu earn a silver medal while Gillian Lawlor earned bronze. On the men's side, Will Smith earned a silver medal in epee. Ten Eagles total finished in a top-six spot for BC. Day two of the 17th ACC Fencing Championships will begin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. with the first round of the women's team event. Liu and Smith earned All-ACC honors for their finishes.

WOMEN'S RESULTS
-Rachel Liu, competing in her first ACC Championship, went 6-5 with a plus-7 touch differential to advance out of the pool and defeated Zsofia Walter of Duke, 15-13, in the semis before falling to Alex Gorman of Duke in the finals.
-Gillian Lawlor also went 6-5 to advance and fell to Gorman in her semifinal before earning a 15-14 victory over Walter for third…additionally, Crystal Chen took eighth and Katarina Hone 10th.
-In foil, Samantha Yeh earned a sixth-place finish while Madison Lee (eighth), Kate Devereaux (ninth) and Samantha Davidson (10th) all took top-10 spots.
-Laura Boden (ninth), Jamie Bang (10th), Gianina DiDonato (11th) and Lucy Hanson (12th) took the strip in epee for the Eagles.

MEN'S RESULTS
-In epee, Will Smith went 8-3 with a plus-12 touch differential in the round robin to move on to the semis where he defeated Duke's Danny Campbell, 15-13 … Smith fell to UNC's Reza Merchant … Michael Corban (fifth), Daniel Gaidar (sixth) and Zachary Westen (12th) rounded out the competition for the Eagles in epee.
-Brian Wang took the top spot coming out of the pool in foil, going 7-4 with a plus-15 touch differential and eventually finished fourth after falling to UNC's Connor Head in the semifinal round …. Bin Huang earned a fifth-place finish and Carl Berggren (11th) took to the strip for the Eagles.
-In sabre, Bolang Meng went 8-3 to advance to the semifinal, where he fell to UNC's Beni Rabinowitz and finished fourth … Spencer Kuldell earned a fifth place finish, going 6-5 with a plus-4 touch differential in the pool round … competing in his first ACC Championship, Inigo Rivera finished 10th and Jahi Tracy took 12th.
