Aguiar Clinches Historic ACC Road Victory over Notre Dame
February 19, 2021 | Women's Tennis
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Boston College rallied on Friday afternoon for its first-ever road victory over ACC rival Notre Dame at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Freshman Marice Aguiar won the clinching match at No. 4 singles as the Eagles beat the Fighting Irish by a score of 4-3.
Â
The win brings the Eagles' record to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, while Notre Dame fell to 7-4 (0-1 ACC).
Â
"I'm so proud of our team, we competed really well today," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "It's very difficult to win on the road. We have had some very close matches in South Bend over the years and finally we came out on top. We played much better in doubles today and it came down to Marice Aguiar's singles match and she played with a lot poise under a lot of pressure. Very excited for her and the team."
With the score tied 3-3, Aguiar came back to win a second set tiebreaker and dominated the third set to win her singles match against Maeve Koscielski. The team of Aguiar and Laura Lopez helped to secure the doubles point for BC to open the match.
Senior captain Kylie Wilcox posted a straight set victory at second singles, defeating Ally Bojczuk 6-2, 6-3. The 25th-ranked tandem of Wilcox and Yufei Long were leading No. 19 Cameron Corse and Page Freeman 5-2 in No. 1 doubles before BC clinched the point.Â
Â
Due to COVID-related issues and a reduced roster for Notre Dame, No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles were not played.
Â
Boston College looks to keep the momentum going on the road this Sunday (Feb. 21) at 12 p.m. against Louisville in Kentucky.
