Eagles' Valiant Comeback Falls Short
December 05, 2021 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. - The Boston College women's basketball team put forth a valiant comeback but fell short in a 69-65 setback at VCU on Sunday afternoon at the Siegel Center. BC falls to 6-2 on the season, and the Rams improve to 5-2.Â
Taylor Soule turned in her fourth game of the season with at least 20 points, scoring a game-high 20 points (14 in the fourth quarter). Soule shot 6-of-11 from the field and hit a season-best eight free throws while grabbing a season-high eight rebounds.Â
Makayla Dickens dropped 15 points off the bench, with three of her five baskets coming from beyond the arc. The senior became the 30th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point club after hitting a 3-pointer in the first quarter.
The duo of Soule and Dickens combined for 35 points and shot 11-of-22. After trailing 54-37 early in the fourth period, the Eagles put together a 23-8 run to slice the gap to one possession with under a minute left. BC scored five straight points later in the run after a Soule layup and three straight from Jaelyn Batts brought the deficit to 62-60.Â
VCU kept the Eagles from tying up or forcing overtime, as they hit seven free throws over the final 37 seconds. Marnelle Garraud's 3-pointer brought the Eagles to within three, but the Rams sealed the win at the line on the ensuing possession.Â
BC scored 30 points in the final period - the most points scored in any quarter this season. Boston College shot 50 percent from the field and went 16-of-19 at the line. However, a season-high 30 turnovers that led to 29 points for VCU played a pivotal factor in the loss.Â
Four players scored in double figures for the Rams. Taya Robinson dropped a team-high 17 points.Â
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Amherst to face UMass at 7 p.m.Â
