December 11, 2021 | Men's Hockey
BOSTON – Trevor Kuntar ripped a shot off the left post to beat Drew Commesso in the fifth round of a shootout, securing an extra Hockey East point for Boston College following a 3-3 deadlock with Boston University in the 285th Battle of Comm Ave on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
Â
The Eagles finished the first semester at 8-5-3 (5-3-2 HEA) through 16 games, moving to 5-1-2 in their last eight trips to Agganis. The Terriers pushed their record to 6-9-3 (5-5-3 HEA).
Â
BC roared back from 2-0 down through 40 minutes to take its first lead of the night at 3-2 in the third period. Marc McLaughlin ignited the comeback with his team-leading 12th goal of the year and added the primary assist on Patrick Giles' go-ahead goal.
Â
Nikita Nesterenko netted his fifth goal of the season during the three-goal third, while Jack St. Ivany registered a pair of assists to raise his point total to 15.
Â
Eric Dop closed the night with 32 saves, including several highlight reel stops during 3-on-3 overtime, and denied BU on all five of its shootout attempts.
Â
Domenick Fensore opened the scoring for the Terriers just past the midway point of the first period, sending a shot glove side through traffic from the high slot.
Â
Early in the second, Tyler Boucher beat Dop high blocker side from the right wing but rang the crossbar, which was confirmed following a video review. BU successfully doubled its lead at 8:28 when Max Kaufman went blocker side on a breakaway.
Â
McLaughlin pulled the Eagles back within one just a minute into the third, one-timing a backhand pass from Kuntar short side from the left wing circle. Â
Â
BC then charged ahead with a pair of goals in just 52 seconds, beginning with a quality net drive from Nesterenko that deflected into the net off a BU skate. Giles finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with McLaughlin and St. Ivany just above the left goal line at 8:11.
Â
Kaufman's second tally of the night three minutes later sent the game into a back-and-forth overtime session.
Â
BC went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill but did not have a power play chance. BU held a slight edge in shots on goal, 35-31.
Â
Boston College returns from the semester break just before New Year's at the Ledyard Classic, hosted by Dartmouth on Dec. 30-31. The Eagles will open the tournament on Dec. 30 against Mercyhurst at 4 p.m.
