No. 16 Eagles Fall 4-2 on the Road to No. 20 UMass Lowell
November 13, 2021 | Men's Hockey
LOWELL, Mass. – No. 20 UMass Lowell scored twice in the third period to snap a 2-2 deadlock and held off 16th-ranked Boston College for a 4-2 Hockey East victory on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center.
The Eagles fell to 6-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in league play, while the River Hawks remained undefeated in Hockey East at 4-0-0 and improved to 6-1-2 overall.
Linemates Trevor Kuntar and Marc McLaughlin had the goals for BC, which was out-shot for the first time in 11 games by a total of 37-26. Andre Lee led the way for UMass Lowell with a pair of goals.
Lowell struck first with five minutes to go in the opening period when Lee tipped a Nick Austin point shot inside the left post, just past the right pad of Eric Dop (33 saves). Ben Meehan whipped a weak angle shot into the net on the power play at 6:28 of the second to double the River Hawks' lead.
Kuntar put the Eagles on the board at the 12:38 mark from the top of the crease as he followed a strong net drive down the right wing from Nikita Nesterenko. The play was reviewed for goaltender interference, but Kuntar's fourth of the season stood.
Less than two minutes later, McLaughlin fired a one-timer low blocker side from the slot to finish a triangle passing play with Jack McBain and Brandon Kruse to knot the score.
Lee tipped another point shot, this time from Jordan Schulting, at 5:48 of the third to restore the lead for Lowell on his second of the night. Carl Berglund then redirected a shot-pass from the slot on the power play at 10:41 for a two-goal cushion.
Boston College had several opportunities in the closing minutes with Dop pulled for an extra skater, but Owen Savory (24 saves) helped seal the win for UML.
BC hosts Maine for a two-game series at Kelley Rink next Thursday and Friday night at 7 p.m.
