Boston College will have players on both sides of the Gold Medal Game for the first time in school history
EDMONTON, Alberta – For the first time in program history, Boston College will have players on both sides of the Gold Medal Game at the IIHF World Junior Championship tonight as the United States faces Canada at Rogers Place. NHL Network will carry the game live at 9:30 p.m. (ET).
Â
Four BC sophomores will compete for World Junior gold as Americans Matt Boldy, Drew Helleson and Spencer Knight square off against Alex Newhook from Canada. Seven different Eagles have earned a total of eight gold medals in the history of the World Junior Championship.
Â
The U.S. is in search of its fifth World Junior title and first since 2017 when an American squad featuring Casey Fitzgerald, Colin White and Joseph Woll defeated Canada in a shootout. Team USA is 3-1 all-time against Canada in the Gold Medal Game, including three straight wins.
Â
Newhook will try to join Dan Bertram (2006, 2007) as the only Eagles ever to win a WJC gold medal for Team Canada. Chuck Kobasew earned a silver medal with the Canadians in 2002.
Â
Newhook missed the quarterfinals due to injury but returned with a goal on his first shift last night against Russia in the semifinals. He has three goals and three assists for six points and a plus-8 rating in five tournament games.
