WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Hockey East Association announced Monday that Boston College women's hockey redshirt junior Cayla Barnes has been named the league's Defensive Player of the week.
The Eastvale, Calif. native registered one goal and one assist for two points while adding seven shots on goal and four blocked shots over the two-win weekend for the Eagles. On Friday, Barnes earned an assist on a power-play goal and added four shots on goal in a 5-3 win over the Merrimack Warriors. The next day at Merrimack, she scored her first goal of the season late in the first period of an eventual 3-1 win. Barnes added three shots on goal and four blocked shots.
Barnes' two points on the weekend move her into a tie for 10th overall in program history for scoring by a defender. The captain now has 52 career points on 11 goals and 41 assists, which ties with Grace Bizal (7-45-52).
Barnes now has six points on one goal and five assists on the year. Her 20 blocked shots tie for eighth overall in the nation while her 33 shots on goal sits third overall among defenders.
This marks the second career weekly honor for Barnes, who earned the league's Rookie of the Week honors once during the 2018-19 season.
