Birdball ALS Awareness Week Features Friday Re-Air of 2017 Game
May 11, 2020 | Baseball
Tune in to the 2017 ALS Awareness Game between BC and NC State Friday at 4 p.m. on Facebook.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- May is ALS Awareness Month and during the week of May 11 the Boston College baseball team will be honoring ALS Awareness through its social media (@BCBirdBall) platforms. Despite the cancellation of the 2020 season, including Friday's ninth annual ALS Awareness Game against Wake Forest, the fight to strike out ALS continues.
On Friday, BC baseball and the Atlantic Coast Conference will team up for a re-air of the 2017 ALS Awareness Game on Facebook. The game can be streamed at Facebook.com/theACC beginning at 4 p.m. The game marked the Eagles' sixth annual ALS Awareness Game and featured BC vs. North Carolina State.
Both BC and NC State's baseball programs have been impacted by ALS. Former BC captain and director of baseball operations Pete Frates ('07)Â was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 at the age of 27. Frates played a major part in advancing research for a cure, including his involvement with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. Frates, whose number three was retired by BC in 2016, passed away this past offseason following a seven-year battle with ALS. The Eagles continued to honor him with "Strike Out ALS" ribbons on their hats, "kALS" stitched in their gloves and this year added a "PF3" match to their jersey. Former Wolfpack outfielder Chris Combs, who was recognized at the 2017 game, was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. Team Chris Combs has raised over $4,000,000 towards finding a cure. Combs number 26 was set to be retired by NC State this season.
The 2017 contest between Boston College and NC State was originally played at Fenway Park on April 22. Eagles right-hander Jacob Stevens (3-4, 4.78) get the ball against Wolfpack lefty Sean Adler (3-5, 4.05). BC alums Jon Sciambi ('92) and Molly McGrath ('11) were on the call for the ESPNU broadcast along with color analyst Danny Kanell.
