April 10, 2020 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Alex Newhook was named the winner of the 2020 Tim Taylor Award on Friday by the Hockey Commissioners' Association as the NCAA Division I Rookie of the Year. Newhook is the first Eagle to win the award since its inception in 2007.Â
The forward led all NCAA freshmen in goals (19), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (3) in his first collegiate season. He was tied for the team-lead in scoring and paced all first-year skaters in Hockey East, closing the season on a 12-game point streak (10-13-23).Â
The St. John's, Newfoundland native previously became the ninth Eagle in program history to be named Hockey East Rookie of the Year. He was recognized as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team.Â
Newhook became the first Boston College rookie since Colin White in 2016 to record 40 points in a single season. He was also just the 12th NCAA player age 19 or younger to hit 40 points in the last decade.
Newhook native closed the year with 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points, ranking ninth nationally in points per game and 12th in goals per game. He was third in the country in plus-minus (+28) behind teammates Jesper Mattila and Ben Finkelstein.Â
The freshman was named the National Player and Rookie of the Month in February with 20 points in nine games. He was also honored as Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week three times and Hockey East Player of the Week once.
Boston College became the first school to sweep the National Rookie of the Year awards after forward Hannah Bilka earned the women's honor last week.
