February 22, 2020 | Softball
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Boston College softball team collected two wins on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Gamecock Invitational, defeating Liberty, 3-0, and Elon, 5-3.
Susannah Anderson and Jenna Ergle led the Eagles, as Anderson picked up two wins on the day and Ergle hit two home runs. Anderson pitched a two-hit complete game shutout against Liberty and followed it up coming in relief against Elon, throwing two innings with four strikeouts.
Ergle went 2/7 on the day, but hit two solo home runs. Her first of the day came against Liberty in the top of the third and the second against Elon in the top of the sixth. Ergle now has four home runs on the season and three in as many games.
AJ Alatorre had a stellar day at the plate, going 3/6 with four RBI and a double.
In the first game against Liberty, BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead off the bat of Ergle's solo shot.
The game would be scoreless until the Eagles added some insurance off a seventh inning rally. Gianna Randazza reached to open the inning on a walk and was followed by a sacrifice bunt to advance her by CC Cook. Emme Martinez then came in to pinch hit and single to left center, but advanced on the throw to give BC runners on second and third.Â
AJ Alatorre then stepped up and hit a double down the right field line to score pinch runners Gianna Sarlo and Britney Richardson and extend the lead to three.
The Eagles then started off a little slower in the second game of the day, against Elon. Elon scored three runs in the bottom of the third off starter Peyton Schnackenberg, before Haley White came in to relieve her. Schnackenberg pitched 2.2 innings while giving up three earned.
White gave BC 2.1 innings of scoreless work, striking out three while allowing only one hit.
In the top of the sixth, Ergle homered to dead center to ignite the BC bats. Martinez followed Ergle with a double of her own before Kristin Giery reached on a fielder's choice. A walk for Djhane Valido would load the bases before Alatorre would single and drive in Sarlo and Richardson to tie the game, 3-3.
Anderson entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and struck out the side.
Then in the seventh, Gianna Boccagno opened the inning with a double to left center. Ellie Mataya then put down a bunt to advance her as she reached safely at first as well. After an Ergle groundout, Martinez hit a single to score Boccagno and advance Mataya to third. Giery added some insurance for the Eagles when she then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score a tagging Mataya.Â
Anderson threw two innings for the Eagles, striking out four total and not allowing a hit.
