BC Taken Deep in Series Opener

PHOENIX – The Boston College baseball team lost its series opener at No. 8 Arizona State, 10-4, in front of 2,590 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Friday night. The Eagles dropped to 3-2, while the Sun Devils evened their record at 3-3.

Each of ASU's first six runs came on three home runs. BC manufactured a run on three hits in the top of the first, but the Sun Devils answered with a three-run home run by third baseman Gage Workman. The Eagles tied the game in the third, but managed to score each run without a hit.

Sophomore right-hander Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) pitched four innings in the start for BC. He allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Arizona State got to Pelio (1-1) for four runs, only one of which was earned, in the fourth. An error opened the inning and a home run by shortstop Alika Williams immediately broke a 3-3 tie. Left fielder Trevor Hauver added his second home run of the game before ASU added its first run of the night scored without leaving the yard.

Lefty Cooper Benson, who was not scheduled to start, lasted just two-plus innings and surrendered three runs on six hits and five walks. Right-hander Boyd Vander Kooi (1-0), the scheduled Saturday starter, tossed six innings of one-run relief with four strikeouts.

BC totaled 11 hits as four players managed multi-hit games. Senior first baseman Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.), who drove in the Eagles' first-inning run, led the way at 3-for-5. Senior left fielder added a ninth-inning single to finish 3-for-5. BC was just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and tallied only one extra-base hit.
