BC will have at least one representative on multiple countries for the sixth time in school history
EDMONTON – Four Boston College sophomores are in preparation for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, which begins on Christmas Day and runs through Jan. 5, 2021 at Rogers Place in Alberta, Canada. The entire tournament will be carried live in the U.S. on NHL Network.
Forward Matt Boldy, defenseman Drew Helleson and goaltender Spencer Knight will represent the United States, while forward Alex Newhook competes for Canada. While Knight makes his third straight World Junior appearance for Team USA, including the last two as the squad's starting goalie, Boldy, Helleson and Newhook will make their debuts at the annual tournament.
The trio gives Boston College a total of 37 World Junior participants for three different countries during Jerry York's tenure. BC's four participants are the most at a single tournament since five Eagles competed at both the 2015 and 2017 events. Casey Fitzgerald, Colin White and Joseph Woll are the last Eagles to win a gold medal at the 2017 tournament.
The United States, which beat Finland 3-2 on Tuesday night in its lone pre-tournament game, will open the WJC on Christmas Day against Russia at 9:30 p.m. (ET). Canada shut out the Russians 1-0 in pre-tournament action last night and will begin tournament play on Saturday (Dec. 26) against Germany at 6 p.m. (ET).
