Alex Newhook is the first Eagle to make Canada's WJC roster since Dan Bertram in 2006 and 2007
BOSTON – Alex Newhook was officially named to Canada's 25-man roster for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship on Friday, becoming the third Eagle ever to represent Boston College on Team Canada at the event.
Newhook will wear No. 15 for Canada as it hosts the 2021 tournament from Dec. 25, 2020 to Jan. 5, 2021 in Edmonton, Alberta.
The St. John's, Newfoundland native is the first BC player to earn a spot on Canada's final roster since Dan Bertram, who won a gold medal in 2006 and 2007. Chuck Kobasew also competed for Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championship, winning silver.
Last year's winner of the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA Division I Rookie of the Year, Newhook has missed the Eagles' first four games while participating in Canada's World Junior Camp in Red Deer, Alberta.
Newhook was the ninth player in program history to be named Hockey East Rookie of the Year and third in the last five years. He was recognized as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team.
As a freshman, the forward posted 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points, ranking ninth nationally in points per game and 12th in goals per game. He led all NCAA freshmen in goals (19), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (3).
Newhook became just the 12th NCAA player age 19 or younger to record 40 points in the last decade. He is the 36th player to earn a spot on a World Junior roster under Jerry York.
