Fifth-year pitcher Marzonie and juniors Burns and Frelick chosen as captains.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Head coach Mike Gambino announced the Boston College baseball captains on Monday afternoon. Graduate student Michael Marzonie (Greenwich, Conn.) and juniors Pete Burns (Reading, Mass.) and Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) were elected captains for the 2021 season by their teammates.
Â
Marzonie, a right-handed pitcher, saw an expanded role in the BC bullpen and clubhouse a year ago as a senior. He pitched in eight of the Eagles' 15 games to a 4.35 earned run average and 10 strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work. Marzonie did not pitch in a game during his first two seasons on the Heights due to injury before finally seeing action in nine relief appearances in 2019.
Â
Burns has served as Boston College's primary catcher since arriving for the 2019 season. He played 38 games as a freshman with 30 starts behind the plate and started 11 in 2020. Burns saw major improvements at the plate from year one to year two with a .531 slugging percentage and .405 on-base percentage as a sophomore. He also spent the 2019 summer season on the Cape with the Bourne Braves.
Â
A Freshman All-American and All-ACC Second Team pick in 2019, Frelick is a .332 career hitter with a .914 OPS. He hit .367 as a freshman before a season-ending injury. Frelick played for the North Shore Navigators in 2018 and 2020; earning Top Prospect honors both seasons.
