Boston College improves to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in ACC play
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Boston College won its third straight game at the Carrier Dome, outlasting Syracuse, 16-13, on Saturday. It marked the 54th time the two teams met on the gridiron.
ÂPhil Jurkovec completed 20-of-29 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Seven different receivers caught a pass on the afternoon, led by Zay Flowers' six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Travis Levy made four grabs for 33 yards, while Jehlani Galloway had three three receptions for 29 yards.
ÂBC pounded the run, as David Bailey logged his fourth career 100-yard rushing game. He carried the ball 25 times for 125 yards. Levy made 17 rushes for 73 yards.
ÂIt was a slow start offensively for both teams. After a pair of punts ended the opening drives for each team, the Eagles used another defensive stop to set up the first scoring drive of the day. BC connected on a 33-yard field goal from Aaron Boumerhi as the Eagles drove 80 yards in 13 plays, chewing up close to eight minutes of time with 1:03 left in the first quarter.Â
ÂSyracuse tied it up on its next drive, connecting from 35 yards out with 12 minutes to go in the opening half.
ÂThe Eagles regained the lead, as Zay Flowers connected with Jurkovec on an acrobatic 20-yard touchdown strike late in the second quarter. Jurkovec went 3-for-3 on the 66-yard drive, connecting on passes to Travis Levy (nine yards) and Ezechiel Tieide (37 yards) before Flowers' sixth TD catch of the season. BC led 10-3 at the break.
ÂOn BC's opening possession of the second half, the Eagles drove deep into Syracuse territory, but a 39-yard field goal attempt by Boumerhi sailed wide right, keeping it a 10-3 game with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter. On the Orange's first possession, they converted on 45-yard FG attempt to cut into the BC lead, making it 10-6.
ÂOn the next drive, the Eagles' ground game set up the reply, as Boumerhi booted a 34-yarder to extend the lead out to 13-6. Bailey, Levy combined to gain 46 of the 58 yards on the drive via the run.
ÂBC's defensive corps engineered turnovers on consecutive Syracuse drives in the 4th quarter. Jason Maitre came up with the interception of Cuse QB JaCobian Morgan, followed by a forced fumble and recovery by Luc Bequette on the next series, giving the Eagles the ball on the Syracuse 18.
ÂBC got to 1st-and-goal, but penalties pushed the Eagles back. Boumerhi put the lead back up 10 - at 16-6 - with just over two minutes to play.
ÂWith :21 seconds to play, Syracuse found the end zone for the first time, trimming the Eagles' lead to 16-13. But the onsides kick attempt by the Orange did not pan out and BC closed it out with a pair of rushes by Bailey, including a game-clinching first down.
ÂMax Richardson led BC with 10 tackles (nine solo), including two sacks. John Lamot made four tackles - all solo - and one tackle for a loss. Chibueze Onwuka and Shitta Sillah also registered a sack. Maitre logged three tackles and an interception.
ÂBoston College recorded a total of 399 yards (191 rushing; 208 passing), including 20 first downs. The Eagles were 10-of-19 on 3rd downs and held an advantage in time of possession (38:49 to 21:11).
ÂWith the win, BC moves to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in ACC play and hosts No. 4 Notre Dame next Saturday - November 14 - at Alumni Stadium. Kickoff time and national television network clearances have yet to be determined.
