BC Drops Season Opener to Louisville

Eagles hang tight early against the Cardinals.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team opened its 2020 season with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Louisville at Power Gym on Friday night. Ahead of the match, both teams agreed to play with mask face coverings throughout the contest.

The Eagles lost in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-9. BC and UL went toe-to-toe through the first set as the Cardinals narrowly outhit the Eagles, .469 to .440. Louisville maintained a steady attack rate the rest of the match, including an error-free .667 in the third.

Claire Chaussee hit .556 with 11 kills to lead all players. Anna DeBeer, who hit a match-high .667 with no errors, and Aiko Jones each added eight kills for the Cardinals.

Boston College was led with seven kills from senior outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.), who added four digs. Senior middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu (Laurel, Md.) contributed six kills and a solo block.

In their collegiate debuts, freshmen setters Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.), who started, and Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) split time in the Eagles' 6-2 offense. Lambros registered 15 assists and four digs, while Penn added nine assists.

BC and Louisville face off again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The match will be streamed on ACCNX.
