Eagles Conclude Four-Day January North American Cup

BC wrapped up the four-day competition on Monday, with Thomas Junseo Park earning 16th place in the Junior Men's Sabre.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Boston College fencing team opened up 2020 at the January North America Cup, concluding the four-day competition on Monday at the Charlotte Convention Center.
DAY BY DAY RESULTS
Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 | Day 1
Zachary Westen ended up with a 72nd-place finish in the Division I Men's Epee, advancing out of the first round after picking up four bout wins on the strength of a plus-6 touch differential and then going 2-3 in the second round before falling to Ariel Simmons in the Table of 128, while Michael Corban (75th) and Will Smith (82nd) also competed. Thomas Junseo Park earned four victories and two defeats in the first round before falling to Maxwell Rodney. In the Senior Team Men's Foil, the BC squad of Bin Huang, Brian Wang, and Justin Herman earned a ninth-place finish after falling in the Table of 16. Spencer Kuldell fought his way to a 17th-place finish in the Junior Men's Sabre after advancing all the way to the Table of 32 before withdrawing. Kuldell went a perfect 5-0 in the first round with a plus-23 touch differential to finish first in the pool results. Additionally, Bolang Meng finished 45th. Jahi Tracy also competed in junior men's sabre while Madison Lee took to the strip in the Division I women's foil.
Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 | Day 2
Cosima Martus picked up two bout wins in the first round of pool play of the Division I Women's Epee. Katarina Hone earned three bout wins to advance out of the Junior Women's Sabre pool before bowing out to Alexandra Tzou. The Senior Team Women's Foil squad of Jessica Muzzi, Madison Lee, and Samantha Davidson finished in 20th place. In the Division I Women's Epee, Rylie Rueda finished 56th and Gianina DiDonato was 94th while Cosima Martus won two bouts in her pool.

Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020 | Day 3
The trio of Thomas Junseo Park, Michael Corban, and Will Smith earned a win in the Table of 32 in the Senior Team Men's Epee before suffering a narrow 45-44 defeat in the Table of 16. The Eagles ended up in ninth. The Senior Women's Team Sabre squad of Gillian Lawlor, Crystal Chen, and Katarina Hone defeated a team from New York University in the Table of 16 before falling in the next round and ultimately finishing seventh. In Junior Men's Foil, Bin Huang finished 15th. Ben Slavin picked up two bout wins in the first round of Division I Men's Sabre to advance before falling to Grant Dodrill while Bolang Meng finished 26th. After picking up four bout wins in her pool of the Junior Women's Epee, Cosima Martus advanced to the Table of 64 before earning a 51st-place finish and Gianina DiDonato was 62nd. Kate Devereaux earned two wins in her pool.

Monday, Jan. 6, 2020 | Day 4
Thomas Junseo Park started the day off with three bout wins in the pool round of Junior Men's Epee to advance to the direct elimination round. He then went on to earn four wins to reach the Table of 16, where he fell to Isaac Herbst in earning a 16th-place finish. In the Senior Team Women's Epee, the Eagles saw a third-place finish from the team of Cosima Martus, Rylie Rueda and Gianina DiDonato. After picking up four bout wins in the pool round, Zachary Westen then earned a victory over Nicholas Smith to earn a spot in the top 100 finishers (98th) of the Junior Men's Epee. Madison Lee and Samantha Davidson each picked up one victory in the pool round of Junior Women's Foil while Kate Devereaux earned two wins. The Senior Men's Sabre team of Ben Slavin, Brian Wang and Bolang Meng earned a fourth-place finish after topping two different trios from NYU by scores of 45-35 and 45-43. The Eagles fell to the Manhattan Fencing Center in the semi-final round. In Division I Women's Sabre, Katarina Hone (91st), Crystal Chen (t-130th) and Gillian Lawlor (129th). Lawlor and Chen each earned a victory in the pool round while Hone picked up two bout wins to advance to the direct elimination round.Â
