Knight Leads No. 5 Eagles Into First Place Tie in Shutout of No. 7 UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Rookie Spencer Knight posted a 30-save shutout and No. 5 Boston College moved into a first place tie atop the Hockey East standings with a 3-0 blanking of No. 7 UMass on Friday night at the Mullins Center.
The Eagles clinched the regular season series against Massachusetts 2-1-0, earning the tiebreaker for seeding in the Hockey East playoffs.
BC improved to 16-7-0 overall and 10-5-0 in the league heading into the Beanpot, while the Minutemen fell to 16-9-2 (9-6-2 HEA).
Following a scoreless first period, BC scored three goals in the early (Alex Newhook), middle (Logan Hutsko), and latter (Graham McPhee) stages of the second to storm into the lead.
Hutsko added an assist on Newhook's goal for a multi-point night, while Ben Finkelstein collected a pair of assists including the 50th of his career.
Knight's best save came with a delayed penalty coming on BC in the middle frame as he robbed Zac Jones with his glove point blank on a backhand deke. The shutout was the fifth of his freshman campaign.
The Eagles' penalty kill was a perfect 5-for-5 in the victory.

1:09, BC Goal (1-0) • Finkelstein threw a puck off the apron from the right goal line and Newhook batted the rebound with his glove. The rookie then whacked the puck out of midair to beat Matt Murray blocker side.
10:44, BC Goal (2-0) • On a 2-on-1 rush, Hutsko skated through the left wing circle into the low slot before cutting to his backhand and lifted the puck short side high under the crossbar. David Cotton had the assist on the play.
18:26, BC Goal (3-0) • Jack McBain poked a pass to McPhee as he cut above the right goal line and the senior curled into the low slot to snap a heavy shot high glove side.

The 68th Beanpot begins on Monday (Feb. 3) as the Eagles face rival Boston University at 8 p.m. from TD Garden. Northeastern and Harvard play the early semifinal at 5 p.m. and both games will be televised on NESN.
