Pennsylvania native brings NFL and collegiate experience to the Heights
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley has announced the hiring of Matt Applebaum as offensive line coach for the Eagles. Applebaum comes to Boston College after a two-year stint at Towson University as offensive line coach.
Â
"Matt is a critical hire for us to help continue our strong history of excellent offensive line play," said Hafley. "He has both college and NFL experience and is familiar with Coach Cignetti's system we will run here at Boston College. Not only is Matt a great offensive line coach and technician, but he sees the big picture and will grow into a coordinator role. We are so excited to have Matt join our BC football family."
Â
In 2019, Applebaum oversaw the development of All-CAA second-team offensive lineman Aaron Grzymkowski for the second consecutive year. Towson's starting left guard played in all 12 games, helping protect all-CAA quarterback Tom Flacco and the Towson offense score 30.2 points per game, including at least 21 points in 10 contests.
Â
Applebaum's line blocked for an offense that finished fourth in the CAA in scoring offense and quarterback Tom Flacco, who was second in the CAA in total offense. Grzymkowski earned All-CAA Second Team recognition, the second year running on the all-conference team. In addition, the line helped block for Flacco and running back Yeedee Thaenrat, each members of the all-conference team.
In 2018, his line helped Towson be ranked No. 1 in the CAA in scoring offense (34.5 points a game) and offensive yards per game (465.0). Right tackle Matt Kauffman was selected as an All-American by the Walter Camp Association, while guard Zane Ventimiglia earned CoSIDA Academic All-America. Kauffman was an All-CAA first-team selection.
He previously served two years as the offensive line coach at Davidson College. He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2017 season.
Â
Prior to his time at Davidson, Applebaum spent one season as the offensive line coach at Southeastern Louisiana (2015) and one year as an offensive assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2014).
Â
Applebaum got his start in coaching in 2008 at Central Connecticut State where he worked with the tight ends and served as the team's video coordinator.Â
Â
He spent three years working with the Washington Redskins, starting as a pro personnel assistant, moved to college personnel assistant and finally to an offensive coaching assistant in 2010. He returned to college coaching following that season and spent two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami before spending a season as the offensive line coach at Bucknell.
Â
Applebaum was a two-year starter on the offensive line at UConn before playing one season professionally with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers in AF2.
Â
He graduated from UConn in 2007 with a degree in political science.Â
