
Eagles Top Wildcats, Fall to Owls in Opening Day of Owls Classic

The volleyball team topped Bethune-Cookman in three sets before falling to Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. –The Boston College volleyball team split the opening day at the Owls Classic, topping Bethune-Cookman in three sets before falling to host school Florida Atlantic, 3-1. The Eagles end the evening with a 5-3 overall record ahead of taking on Southern Utah tomorrow morning to cap off the tournament.

Clare Naughton tallied a match-high nine kills in the win over the Wildcats while Cat Balido followed closely behind with eight. Freshman Izzy Clavenna marked a career best, hitting at a .545 clip with seven kills and only one error on 11 attempts. Junior Amaka Chukwujekwu hit an error-free .545 with six kills on 11 attempts, also adding three blocks (two solos, one assist). Madison McKnight and Jane DeJarld combined for 31 assists, with DeJarld tallying 18 and McKnight adding 13.Â

Later in the day, sophomore Jewel Strawberry led with a double-double from 20 kills and 12 digs, also adding four blocks. Chukwujekwu committed only one error on 13 attempts for 10 kills to hit at a team-best .692 on the evening. The junior also added four blocks, tied with Strawberry to lead the team. DeJarld and McKnight combined for 53 assists over the four-set match, with McKnight adding a match-best 30.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
VS. BETHUNE-COOKMAN
Set 1 –The Eagles stormed out to a 5-0 opening lead before suffering a series of Wildcat points, coming from four Eagle errors and two kills from Bethune-Cookman. As the Wildcats gained the lead, their play slowed and earned three points for the Eagles to get back on top. BCU never quite reached the lead again, falling victim to two 3+ point runs for the Eagles. A kill from Chukwujekwu earned the set point for BC.
Set 2 –The teams found themselves at a 2-2 tie early on before the Eagles went on a 7-1 point run to solidify their lead for the remainder of the set. The Wildcats reached to just a two-point deficit but it proved to be not enough as Chukwujekwu tallied another set point kill for the Eagles.
Set 3 –BC earned another 5-0 beginning run before allowing the first Wildcat point of the set. The Eagles wasted no time jumping back to their feet, adding five more points to show a 10-1 score. Bethune-Cookman never came closer than six points in the deciding set, as the Eagles added an 8-1 run before tallying the final three points of the set for the win.Â

VS. FLORIDA ATLANTIC
Set 1 –The Eagles began on the right foot, jumping to 7-1 lead early in the match. The hosts never quite caught up, only reaching to a two-point deficit through the remainder of the match. The Owls rallied for four points before the Eagles closed out the set with a pair of kills from Strawberry, 25-21.
Set 2 –The teams found five ties early on in the second set before BC put up five straight points to take a 12-7 lead. The teams traded points before Florida Atlantic tallied four points of their own to gain the lead. The Owls took six of the last nine points to take the set, 25-23, with a kill from Jordan Yauch.Â
Set 3 –Neither team found more than a two-point lead until FAU tallied four straight points at the conclusion of the set to take the win, 25-22.
Set 4 -Â The eventual deciding set began with another series of point trades before FAU rallied for three straight to take a 5-2 lead, allowing just one BC point before adding four more to make a 9-3 score. Each team earned multiple two-point runs before the Eagles took the lead with an eight-point stretch. The Owls answered quickly, adding four of their own to regain the lead at 23-22. Both teams once again added a pair of points each, but the Owls tallied the final two points after a tie at 25 to take the set and match, 27-25.
