
Eagles Fly South for Owls Classic

The volleyball team will match up with Bethune-Cookman, Florida Atlantic and Southern Utah this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team heads south to participate in the Owls Classic this weekend, hosted by Florida Atlantic. The Eagles will take on Bethune-Cookman (10:00 AM) and Florida Atlantic (7:00 PM) tomorrow, Sept. 13, before taking on Southern Utah (10:00 AM) on Saturday.
The Eagles are coming off of a statement weekend, topping each of their opponents at the UConn Challenge. Going a perfect 3-0 over the tournament, BC bested Central Connecticut (3-1), UConn (3-2) and Iona (3-0). Sophomore Jewel Strawberry and senior Jill Strockis earned All-Tournament Team honors while junior Amaka Chukwujekwu was named Tournament MVP after putting up 39 points and 18 blocks over the trio of matches. Classmate Madison McKnight recorded her first career double-double after a 10 dig, 27 assist performance against Central Connecticut.
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats come into the tournament with a 2-3 record, topping Texas Southern twice (3-1, 3-2). Jordan Jefferson has led the offensive effort with a team-best 57.5 points through their five matches this season. Defensively, Jefferson also leads in digs with 67 while Faith Landreneaux has a team-best 15.0 blocks. This matchup will mark the first meeting between the Wildcats and Eagles in program history.
The Owls host the tournament with a 3-2 record, most recently topping Texas Christian in five sets. Historically, the Owls have a 1-0 series lead over the Eagles, having met just once in 2005. Massiel Matos had a team-high 69.0 points with 57 kills through the first two weekends. Kori Varney leads the defensive effort with 68 digs while Cailea Gibbs has recorded 17.0 blocks.
The Thunderbirds come in with the best record of the participants at 5-1. Shannon Webb is 1.5 points away from hitting the 100 mark through their opening weekends. Defensively, Miahna Waters has a best 74 digs while Mckenzie Dowell has tallied 27.0 blocks. BC holds a 1-0 series lead over Southern Utah, taking the lone win just last year.
Following this weekends' tournament, BC comes close to home to play across town at Harvard on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 PM.
