
Eagles Split the Day at Oregon Classic

The volleyball team capped off their first tournament weekend with a 3-0 win over UC Irvine and a 0-3 loss to No. 11 Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. – The Boston College volleyball team (1-2) wrapped up day two of the Oregon Classic, earning their first win of the season in a 3-0 sweep of UC Irvine before falling to host school No. 11 Oregon.
The Eagles began the day with a vengeance after falling, 3-0, to Oregon State in their first match of the tournament on Friday night. BC led throughout the entire match against the Anteaters on Saturday afternoon, hopping out to at least a 5-2 lead to begin each of the three sets.
Sophomore Jewel Strawberry tallied a match-high 12 kills over the contest with UC Irvine while freshman libero Torey Baum put up 15 digs defensively. The Eagles combined for four blocks as a team, with Clare Naughton earning a block solo in the effort. Strawberry led the offensive effort in the second match of the day, as well, tallying nine kills and one ace while Sophie West and Cat Balido each added six kills.
BC HIGHLIGHTS
VS. UC IRVINE
Set 1 – The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 scoring run to open the match before allowing back-to-back Anteater kills by Loryn Carter and Onye Ofoegbu. BC earned a point on a ball handling error before Ofoegbu tallied her second kill of the night. The Eagles earned the next five points of the match thanks to kills from Baum, Strawberry and Carly Kutschke, a service ace from DeJarld and a block assist from Kustchke and Cat Balido. After two points were traded between teams UC Irvine added four straight points before committing a service error. The Eagles scored seven of the next 13 points, finalizing the set in their favor.
Set 2 – The set began with a pair of service errors affecting both teams before the Eagles picked up four straight points through two Anteater attack errors, an ace from DeJarld and a block from Balido and Kutschke. UC Irvine added six of the next eight points before the Eagles hopped to a 5-1 run to jump ahead. The Eagles ended capped off the set with five straight points and six of the final seven points of the set.
Set 3 - The Anteaters earned the first point of the set for the first time in the match, but the Eagles answered right back, recording seven of the next eight points. The teams traded off runs through the remainder of the set before the Eagles pushed for four points to extend their lead to 21-13. BC capped off the match with a kill from Sophie West and an ace from Strawberry.
VS. OREGON
Set 1 – BC made their way to a 3-1 lead to begin the match, tallying the next two of three points in the set. At 5-3 in the Eagles' favor, the Ducks went on a 4-1 run to knot the set at six a piece. Two kills from West and an ace from Jill Strockis put the Eagles back in the lead before the Ducks answered with three points of their own. The teams were evenly matched through the remainder of the set, finding another tie at 12 before Oregon put up another three straight points. The Ducks rounded out their first win with another trio of kills from Ronicka Stone, Taylor Williams and Karson Bacon.
Set 2 – The Ducks jumped to a quick lead to open the second set, finding seven of the first nine points. The run continued with minimal interruption from the visiting Eagles as the difference grew to 12-4 in favor of the Ducks. BC rallied to pull within two points with a 22-20 lead for Oregon before the Ducks tallied off three straight points to take the set.
Set 3 – Oregon began the set with kills from Willow Johnson and Brooke Nuneviller before Balido tallied for the Eagles. The teams split the next four points before the Ducks found their footing and polished off four straight points to take the lead to 8-3. Oregon found another four-point run shortly after to up their score to 14-6. BC pulled within four points with a kill from Balido and four straight Oregon errors, but the Eagles would only put up four more points in the match while the Ducks found nine to capture the match.
UP NEXT
The Eagles return to the east coast for more tournament play next weekend as they head to Connecticut for the UConn Challenge. BC will face Central Connecticut State, UConn and Iona College during the tournament.

- Madison McKnight earned a team-high 14 helpers against the Anteaters.
- Jane DeJarld added three kills, 10 assists and eight digs against Oregon. The senior led BC with two service aces in the evening match.
