
Eagles Suffer Setback in Season Opener

EUGENE, Ore. - The Boston College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Oregon State in their first competition of 2019. The Eagles began each of the three sets with the opening points, but couldn't find a way to halt the Beavers' offense.
The Eagles combined for 25 kills and hit at a 0.07 clip through the match, led by Clare Naughton who put up a .200 hitting percentage and a .300 kill percentage from 10 attempts on the evening. Freshman Izzy Clavenna earned a .250 hitting percentage and .500 kill percentage off of her four attempts.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshmen Gabby McCaa and Torey Baum made their collegiate debuts as starters while classmates Clavenna and Silvia Ianeselli saw action off the bench.
- Seven Eagles tallied multiple kills, led by sophomore Jewel Strawberry (5). Naughton, Sophie West, Cat Balido and Amaka Chukwujekwu each added three kills in the effort while Jill Strockis and Clavenna tallied two a piece.
- Defensively, Baum led with 11 digs in her debut. Strawberry, West, Balido and Chukwujekwu each added a block assist.
- Senior Jane DeJarld assisted on a team-high 10 points for the Eagles.
- DeJarld and Makenzie Morrison each recorded one service ace.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 - The Eagles came out first, led by the first kill of the season from McCaa. The Eagles jumped to 2-0 before the Beavers caught their footing and pulled a 4-0 scoring run before allowing the Eagles to earn another point. Oregon State continued with their momentum, turning out another 4-0 scoring run to which the Eagles never caught up.
Set 2 - BC registered the first points of the set once again before falling victim to a 10-0 Beaver scoring run. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set, but the Eagles couldn't erase the deficit.
Set 3 - The Eagles started once again on a scoring run before slipping. BC pulled within five points before the Beavers took the match after a 5-1 scoring run to round out the evening.

The Eagles continue action at the Oregon Classic with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 31. BC will face UC Irvine at 2:00 PM EST and Oregon at 9:00 PM EST.
