The volleyball team will face Oregon, Oregon State and UC Irvine to open the season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team makes their 2019 debut at the Oregon Classic this weekend, Aug. 30-31 in Eugene, Ore. The Eagles will match up with the Oregon State Beavers at 8:00 PM EST on Friday before taking on the UC Irvine Anteaters at 2:00 PM EST and the Oregon Ducks at 9:00 PM EST on Saturday.
Boston College is coming off of their best season in the ACC era under first year head coach Jason Kennedy. The Eagles ended 2018 with a 15-15 record, including five conference wins - a feat that hadn't been accomplished since joining the league.
The Eagles return six of their seven top scorers from 2018 this season, led by junior Clare Naughton who posted a team-best 307 points as a sophomore. Cat Balido, Jewel Strawberry, Amaka Chukwujekwu, Ally Mullen and Jill Strockis join Naughton as the leading point-scorers from 2018 on the current roster.
The highest-ranked freshman class in program history joins the veterans after having earned a highest honorable mention from PrepVolleyball this summer, placing the group in the top-55 of classes nationally. Newcomers Gabby McCaa (middle blocker) and Torey Baum (libero) started during each set in the Eagles' preseason exhibition loss to Northeastern.
The Eagles will take on the Oregon State Beavers for their first matchof the tournament. The Beavers ended 2018 with an 11-21 record with a 1-19 mark in the PAC-12. 2018 leading scorer Amy Underdown returns for the Beavers this season after a standout junior campaign, putting up 456.0 points and 406 kills. On the defensive front, Grace Massey led with 560 digs while Maddy Gravley tallied 129 blocks, averaging 1.08 blocks per set.
Saturday afternoon the team will meet the UC Irvine Anteaters, who went 16-13 overall in 2018 with a 10-6 Big West record. Leading scorer Loryn Carter returns after tallying 258.0 points on the season, putting up 303 kills. Defensively, lead-digger Haley DeSales (489 digs) and lead-blocker Idara Akpakpa (109 blocks) were lost to graduation and look to be replaced by Erin Alonso (244 digs) and Makayla Wolfe (93 blocks).
To wrap up the weekend, the Eagles will take on the host school, Oregon. The Ducks earned a spot on the Preseason AVCA National Coaches Poll, debuting at No. 12. The Ducks are the only tournament participant to earn a ranking - and will be the highest-ranked opponent that the Eagles will see all season. Led by graduated Lindsey Vander Weide last season, now-senior Ronicka Stone is set to be the Ducks' most prominent contributor in 2019. The Ducks went 23-11 overall last season, including a 13-7 record in PAC-12 play.
BC has never matched up with either UC Irvine or Oregon State and has only met Oregon once in program history, suffering a loss to the Ducks in 1999. Following the tournament, the Eagles return to the east coast to participate in the UConn Challenge, hosted by UConn on Sept. 6-7.
