The selections mark BC's first time with two athletes as finalists
WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the first time in program history, two Boston College athletes have been named Tewaaraton Award Finalists, as announced by the committee on Thursday. Reigning award recipient Sam Apuzzo is joined by classmate Dempsey Arsenault in the group of five finalists. The Tewaaraton Award is given annually to the best male and female college lacrosse players in the nation.
Apuzzo became Boston College's first finalist since Sarah Mannelly in 2015 last year en route to becoming the program's first recipient. As a junior, Apuzzo put up 129 points over 24 games played, earning ACC Attacker of the Year, ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and All-ACC First Team nods, while also becoming BC's first Honda Award for Lacrosse recipient. She currently holds Boston College program records in points, goals, and draw controls and ranks third in assists. She became the fastest Eagle to hit the 100 career point mark, doing so in just 25 games, and has since had three 100-point seasons. As a senior, she has held the top spot nationally in goals and points almost exclusively, never falling out of the top-2 in either category throughout the season. Heading into the postseason, she's won control of 150 draws for the Eagles, paving the way to their second consecutive undefeated regular season. This year, she was named the ACC Attacker of the Year for the second consecutive year, was also named the US Lacrosse Preseason Player of the Year and earned her way to the Preseason All-ACC Team, Preseason All-America First Team, Midseason All-America First Team, and the ACC All-Tournament Team.Â
Arsenault earns her first finalist selection after being named a nominee as a junior, playing a seamless balance between offense and defense for the Eagles. The midfielder has tallied 57 goals and 23 helpers for 80 points heading into the NCAA Tournament while causing 14 turnovers and winning 84 draws. A four-year starter for BC, Arsenault has earned five different All-America selections and was most recently named BC's first-ever ACC Midfielder of the Year. She holds the second-best program record for draw control wins, behind only Apuzzo, and is third all-time in ground ball pickups. This year, she has earned her way to the US Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team, Preseason All-ACC Team, Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America First Team and the ACC All-Tournament Team.
Boston College joins Syracuse, Northwestern, Maryland and Virginia as the only schools in Division I to have more than one player as a top-5 finalist for the Tewaaraton in a single year. The 2019 Tewaaraton ceremony is set for May 30 in Washington, D.C.
