Eagles back in action Wednesday vs. Quinnipiac.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team shutout Rhode Island, 4-0, at the Harrington Athletics Village on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game win streak from March 10-15, improved to 16-17 on the season. The Rams dropped to 14-15 overall.
Redshirt-sophomore left-hander Joey Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.) made his first career start and lasted four-shutout innings. Walsh (1-3) got the win on a scheduled short start with 66 pitches thrown. He allowed three hits, one walk and struck out two.
BC backed Walsh early; claiming the lead in the second on a RBI-single up the middle by freshman second baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.). Junior right fielder Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.) led off the inning with a bunt-single. He stole second and advanced on the play as the throw from behind the plate went into center field.
The Eagles added single runs in each of the middle three innings; all on sacrifice-flies by senior catcher Gian Martellini (Johnston, R.I.), junior shortstop Brian Dempsey (Potomac, Md.) and Morissette.

- BC denied URI the first run of the day when Alu fielded a groundball at third and elected to throw home and nab the lead runner on a tag play at the plate.
- Cunningham dropped down a bunt-single to lead off the second, stole second and advanced on an error before scoring the first run of the day on a Morissette single up the middle.
- Alu singled with one away in the fourth and went first-to-third on a throwing error by the URI third baseman. He scored to double the BC leader on a line-drive sacrifice-fly to left off the bat of Martellini.
- BC added its third run of the day on a bases-loaded sacrifice-fly from Dempsey in the fifth.
- The Eagles turned double plays on the infield with two runners aboard to end both the third and sixth innings.
- Playing in shallow right, Morissette made a diving, backhand stop to take away a hit and throw out the batter in the eighth.
- BC won back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game win streak from March 10-15.
- The Eagles posted their second shutout of the season and first since an 8-0 win at No. 19 Florida State (3/31).
- Walsh made his first career start in his 35th career appearance.
- Walsh tossed a season-high four innings, which matched his career-high set two other times and most recently against Pittsburgh (4/7/18).
- Cunningham extended his reached base streak to 13 game sand matched his career-best hitting streak at seven for the third time and second this season.
