April 27, 2019 | Football
First BC tight end drafted since 2004
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College tight end Tommy Sweeney was selected with the 228th pick in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft Saturday by the Buffalo Bills. Sweeney is the fourth Boston College player selected in the 2019 NFL Draft after Chris Lindstrom went 14th overall in the first round Thursday to the Atlanta Falcons, Zach Allen was taken in the third round to the Arizona Cardinals with the 65th pick and Will Harris was the 81st pick overall by the Detroit Lions in the third round.
Â
Since 1980, Boston College had at least one player drafted every year except 2005 and 2013. The Eagles have had multiple players selected in the NFL Draft in six consecutive years under head coach Steve Addazio. This year marks the second time that four players during Addazio's tenure were selected in the same draft.
Â
Boston College tied a school record with four players selected in the seven-round NFL Draft. The Eagles also had four players picked in the 1995 and 2014 NFL Drafts in the current seven-round format.
Â
Sweeney is the first BC player drafted by Buffalo since former teammate Matt Milano was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Â
"Tommy is a tight end who can play anywhere on the field," said Addazio. "He can split out and catch the ball like a wide receiver, he runs great routes, he can attach and block. He is tough, durable and an every down player. He will be a great pro with the Buffalo Bills."
Â
Sweeney is the 18th player drafted during the Addazio era at Boston College and the first Boston College tight end to be drafted since Sean Ryan went in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Sweeney is the 217th player in Boston College history to be selected in the NFL or AFL Draft.
Â
Sweeney was named the ACC's top tight earning a spot on the All-ACC first-team in 2018 after finishing second on the team in receptions (32) and third in receiving yards (348). The John Mackey semifinalist was an All-ACC third-team selection in 2017.
Â
Sweeney and Harris received the William J. Flynn award after the 2018 season as the team's most valuable player.Â
Â
The New Jersey native appeared in 50 career games, including 47 consecutive starts at tight end. He finished his Boston College career with 99 receptions for 1,281 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is ranked fifth in school history in receptions and receiving yards for a tight end.
