Late Rally Puts BC Past UMass Lowell
April 23, 2019 | Baseball
The Eagles and River Hawks traded leads until BC went back in front in the eighth.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team scored twice in the eighth for a 6-5, comeback win over UMass Lowell at the Harrington Athletics Village on Tuesday night. The Eagles improved to 20-22 on the season, while the River Hawks dropped to 9-28.
Â
The lead changed hands for the third time after the fourth inning as BC scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior catcher Gian Martellini (Johnston, R.I.) hit a leadoff-single up the middle and scored on a two-out triple by junior center fielder Dante Baldelli (Cumberland, R.I.) with the tying run. Baldelli then scored the eventual game-winner on an infield-single by sophomore left fielder Chris Galland (Sudbury, Mass.), who beat the rap at first on a throw from short.
Â
Junior right-hander Matt Gill (Simsbury, Conn.) wound up the winner after bailing out the bullpen as the third Eagle pitcher to throw in the top of the eighth as he got the final out and stranded two. Senior righty Thomas Lane (Georgetown, Mass.) locked down his second save of the season after issuing a two-out walk and leaving the potential tying run on base.
Â
Boston College rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Alu singled for his third of four this in the game to load the bases with nobody out. A base hit and a walk followed to cut the UMass Lowell lead to one. The Eagles then tied the game and went in front on a pair of bases-loaded sacrifice-flies from junior first baseman Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.) and freshman second baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.).
Â
Freshman RHP Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.) was the third BC pitcher of the night. He entered with the bases loaded and nobody out and needed just one pitch to strand the runners. Mancini remained in the game for the next three innings as he retired 10 of 12 batters faced with just two hit batters to reach, while striking out three.
