UC Irvine Defeats Eagles 5-2 in California

IRVINE, Calif. – Chris Grasel and Max Mendelsohn earned straight set victories in singles, but Boston College fell 5-2 to UC Irvine on Monday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The Eagles dropped to 4-6 overall on the spring season, while the Anteaters improved to 5-3.

UCI won the doubles point following victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.

Grasel edged Mateusz Smolicki, who came in leading the Anteaters in singles wins, as he won a first set tiebreaker 6-0 and dominated the second set 6-1 in the No. 2 slot. Mendelsohn collected a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Daniel Gealer in No. 4 singles.

BC's No. 1 player Derek Austin played a tight match against Sasha Krasnov but dropped the first set in a tiebreaker and had the second set slip away 7-5.
The Eagles also competed in the 130th annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship over the weekend in La Jolla, California, but no BC team was able to advance beyond the round of 64.Â

Boston College is off this weekend before it travels to face ACC rivals Florida State (March 15) and Miami (March 17) in two weekends.
